Preview: Bowling Green at Cincinnati
The Cincinnati Bearcats return home to Nippert Stadium on Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff against Bowling Green, looking to bounce back from a gut-wrenching season-opening loss to Nebraska. Despite falling 20-14 in a defensive battle at Arrowhead Stadium, head coach Scott Satterfield and his players made it clear this week: the focus is forward.
And the focus is Bowling Green.
“We have to continue to elevate our play, play with the same intensity, and execute better,” Satterfield said during Tuesday’s press conference. “They’re not going to be intimidated. They’ve played big teams before and played them close. We have to be ready.”
In their opener, the Bearcats were in position to steal a win late. With no timeouts and under a minute remaining, redshirt junior quarterback Brendan Sorsby drove Cincinnati deep into Nebraska territory before a disguised coverage led to a game-sealing interception.
“Props to those guys,” Sorsby said. “It was just a really good disguise on the last snap… but we’ve got 11 games left. There’s no point in letting this drag into next week.”

The Bearcats offense was held to just 69 passing yards, but the run game put up over 200 yards against a Nebraska defense that ranked in the top 20 nationally in rush defense last year.
“We were pleased with the run game. Pryor made guys miss. Tawee ran hard,” Satterfield said. “We’ll see how the touches work out this week, but all three — including Manny Covey — are capable.”
Despite the loss, Cincinnati showed promise in areas that plagued them a year ago. Discipline, for one. The Bearcats were flagged just four times — all false starts — and committed no penalties on defense or special teams.
“We focused a lot in the offseason on being a disciplined football team,” Satterfield said. “That part showed up.”
Defensively, Cincinnati held Nebraska to 20 points despite the Huskers dominating time of possession (nearly 40 minutes). The Bearcats didn’t allow a single explosive play.
“We can be like those great Ravens defenses — if you can’t score, you can’t win,” said senior defensive lineman Jalen Hunt. “That’s our mentality.”
Up front, the Bearcats' defensive line continues to be a strength. Dontay Corleone played 40 snaps in the opener, while Hunt led the unit with 41.
“We want to rotate to keep those guys fresh, but Dontay’s got a little more in the tank if we need him,” said Satterfield.
For his part, Corleone doesn’t mind the rotation.
“I like to play a lot, but I want to see other guys succeed too,” the Cincinnati native said. “I’m being put in different situations to show what I can do — whether that’s rushing from zero or getting outside to the quarterback.”
Hunt, in his return from injury, has embraced his leadership role — both on and off the field.
“It’s good having depth and experience,” he said. “We’ve played in big games before. It’s our job to pass that on.”
Bowling Green enters Saturday’s matchup with a new quarterback — former Notre Dame transfer Drew Pyne — and a gritty attitude that’s earned them respect from the Cincinnati sideline.
“They’ll play hard, they’re physical, they’re well-coached,” said Satterfield. “And they’re not scared of anybody. They played Penn State and Texas A&M close last year.”
Corleone echoed the respect: “They’re a talented team with a Hall of Fame coach. We’re not overlooking them. We’re motivated.”
Bowling Green is coached by 1995 Heisman Trophy winner Eddie George, in his first season at the helm.
Bowling Green’s stable of running backs and Pyne’s experience across multiple programs,
will present challenges for the Bearcat defense.
"He obviously has a lot of talent, probably a very smart player, in order to start at four schools That's hard to do as a quarterback, to start at this many places and to be able to continue to play." Satterfield said in regards to Pyne. "So he's certainly got a lot of experience. We're not going to show him anything he has not already seen. He does a really good job at great mechanics, he’s an accurate passer. So certainly a capable quarterback that can do everything they are asking him to do. I think they have some outstanding running backs at Bowling Green that really run hard and fast. Week number two, we will see what kind of wrinkles they bring.”
Pyne finished 12-of-18 for 109 yards passing last week against Lafayette, while running back Kaderris Roberts rushed for 66 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.
Keys to the game
For Cincinnati, the biggest key is getting the passing game on track. Sorsby admitted he’s frustrated with the lack of production through the air, but he's determined to turn the page.
“Sixty-nine passing yards isn’t up to my standards,” he said. “We didn’t throw well to anybody. I have to find ways to get our guys the ball in space and let them go to work.”
That includes tight end Joe Royer, who Sorsby said needs to be a bigger part of the offense: “We have to get Joe the ball as many times as we can.”
Since 2023, BG ranks No. 5 nationally in fewest passing yards allowed per game, as well as fewest first downs allowed by the pass.
On defense, the Bearcats will aim to create takeaways — something they narrowly missed in Kansas City. A dropped pick-six and two fumbles left on the field were critical.
“We have to take advantage of those chances,” said Satterfield. “That’s how you win the turnover margin.”
Final Thoughts:
Saturday is a chance for Cincinnati to reset the tone of the season in front of their home crowd. While the loss to Nebraska stings, there’s confidence throughout the program that this group is built for the long haul.
“All our goals are still ahead of us,” Sorsby said. “It’s a long season. We just have to take it one week at a time — and it starts this week.”
