Recap: Cincinnati 37 Kansas 34

In a game that saw nearly 1,200 total yards and just one turnover, Cincinnati outlasted Kansas 37-34 on the road Saturday in a high-octane offensive duel that went down to the final whistle.

Quarterback Brendan Sorsby was the steady hand for the Bearcats, completing 29-of-43 passes for 388 yards and 2 touchdowns with no turnovers. Sorsby added 52 rushing yards on 13 carries, accounting for 440 total yards of offense on the night.

The Bearcats (3-1) amassed 603 total yards and scored on their final possession to seal their first Big 12 win of the season, silencing a raucous crowd at David Booth Memorial Stadium.

“Just extremely proud of our guys,” said head coach Scott Satterfield postgame. “To come on the road in our first Big 12 contest and get this kind of victory, when it's a game that goes back and forth — that's huge.”

Kansas struck first with a stunning 93-yard touchdown pass from Jalon Daniels to Emmanuel Henderson Jr. just 11 seconds into their opening drive. Cincinnati responded with a 13-play, 75-yard drive, capped by a 2-yard touchdown run by Tawee Walker to tie the game at 7-7.

The teams traded field goals and touchdowns throughout the first half. Brendan Sorsby found Cyrus Allen for a 10-yard score, while kicker Stephen Rusnak added field goals from 29 and 43 yards, giving Cincinnati a 20-13 lead at halftime.

The shootout continued in the second half, with Daniels and Henderson Jr. connecting again for a 75-yard touchdown, while Sorsby answered with another touchdown to Allen—this time from 14 yards out. After more field goals, Kansas took a late 34-30 lead with just 1:45 remaining.

But Sorsby and the Bearcats delivered in the clutch. Needing to drive 75 yards to win the game, they marched down the field in just 1:16, and Tawee Walker punched in his second touchdown of the day from 2 yards out with 29 seconds left to seal a dramatic 37-34 road win.

Head coach Scott Satterfield, visibly emotional postgame, called it a “three-years-in-the-making” kind of win.

"Extremely proud of our guys," Satterfield said. "To come on the road in our first Big 12 contest this year and get this kind of victory, not just a win but the way we did it—it says a lot about the progress we've made."

Despite four touchdowns being called back due to penalties, Sorsby and the Bearcats offense never lost rhythm. The redshirt-junior quarterback remained composed under pressure, especially during the final drive.

"I thought that’s where Sorsby did a great job—just holding his composure and playing the next play," Satterfield said. "That’s hard to do when you feel like big plays keep getting taken off the board."

With 1:45 left in the game and Cincinnati trailing 34-30, Sorsby led a 10-play, 75-yard game-winning drive, converting a crucial 4th-and-10 to Noah Jennings, and setting up Tawee Walker for the game-winning 2-yard touchdown run.

"That fourth-and-10 was everything," Satterfield said. "Then we got in a rhythm, and at the end there, yeah I wanted to bleed the clock a bit more—but we had to punch it in."

Satterfield also praised the resilience of his offensive line, which allowed just one sack against a Kansas defense that came into the game with 13 on the season.

“This was the best front we’ve played this year,” he said. “To only give up one sack today—that’s a win for us.”

Walker’s two touchdowns, along with Cyrus Allen’s two receiving scores (10 and 14 yards), and Stephen Rusnak’s three field goals (29, 43, and 24 yards), carried the Bearcats offensively. The final scoring drive erased a potential gut punch after Kansas had taken the lead with 1:45 left on a 6-yard TD pass from Jalon Daniels to Levi Wentz.

But for Satterfield, the play of the game came earlier—on defense.

“Antoine Peek knocking that ball out at the one-inch line—that was the difference,” he said. “That’s the kind of play we’ve been missing in these types of games in recent years.”

The Bearcats finished with 603 total yards and showed tremendous balance despite facing multiple setbacks from penalties. Kansas matched with 597 yards of their own in what Satterfield admitted was a "quarterback showcase."

"When you’ve got two good quarterbacks, I don’t care how good your defense is—there's going to be yards," Satterfield said. "Sorsby, man, he's just an ultra-competitor. He stood in there and took hits just to let guys get to their depths. That takes guts."

Satterfield also made an emotional mention of the game-winning power run play call—dedicated to a late friend.

“That power play on the goal line—my buddy Shawn Clark, who passed away last week, he loved that play,” Satterfield said. “We scored twice on it today, including the game-winner. That one was for him.”
