Watch: Scott Satterfield Big 12 Media Day Availability

Cincinnati head coach Scott Satterfield delivered a bold and optimistic message at Big 12 Media Days on July 8 at The Star in Frisco, signaling that his third season with the Bearcats is one defined by belief, identity, and Big 12 readiness.

‘We Belong Here’

Satterfield didn’t mince words when addressing Cincinnati’s move into the Big 12. “We’ve earned our place in this league,” he asserted, emphasizing the Bearcats’ competitiveness. He referenced their 2023 campaign and transfers as proof that UC can consistently challenge conference opponents—on and off the field.

Building Continuity in Year 3

After two seasons adapting to a new conference and coaching structure, Satterfield described 2025 as “the year we truly gel.” With more reps in his system and a roster increasingly molded to his vision, the emphasis is on refining execution and eliminating mistakes. “We’re deeper, more seasoned, and ready to push,” he added .

Portal Hits & Recruitment Focus

Satterfield touched on UC’s aggressive portal strategy, saying the influx of transfers was about “addressing key positions—not quick fixes.” Yet, he stressed that recruiting high-character, high-upside prospects remains the long-term goal. “We’ll keep pushing the portal, but our target is sustainable roster building” .

Fostering a Competitive Culture

When asked about culture, Satterfield succinctly replied, “This is a Bearcats culture—tough, accountable, relentless.” He pointed to the leadership of quarterback Brendan Sorsby and standout defensive tackle Dontay Corleone as the embodiment of that cultural backbone.

Getting off to a fast start in 2025

Satterfield made clear on July 9 that Thursday night’s season opener against Nebraska—set for  Aug 28 at Arrowhead Stadium—is more than just a non‑conference date: it’s a high-stakes test early in the Bearcats’ Big 12 journey.

“It’s a great gauge for our football team,” Satterfield said, underscoring how the caliber of Nebraska has already elevated the Bearcats’ offseason preparation"

With Cincinnati still shuffling the pieces after a rocky 5–7 2024, Satterfield admitted the matchup has triggered a new sense of urgency.

“We feel like we’ve got to be hitting on all cylinders when you’re starting the season playing against a team like Nebraska,” he added, noting the added intensity in spring and summer workouts.

Satterfield didn’t shy away from complimenting Nebraska — and its coach Matt Rhule — drawing parallels to high-quality, well-coached teams he’s faced before.

“He’s an outstanding coach… his teams continue to grow and get better,” Satterfield said of Rhule, calling it “a great test for us”

The neutral-site setup at Arrowhead adds another layer to the challenge.

“It’ll be an outstanding atmosphere… a sell‑out,” Satterfield predicted. “There’ll be a bunch of people wearing red.” He noted that even though the venue is in Kansas City, Nebraska fans are expected to rival Cincinnati’s presence.

Satterfield is sending a clear message: Cincinnati isn’t easing into the season — they're stamping their intent early. By embracing this opener as a “gauge,” the Bearcats demonstrate not just respect for Nebraska, but confidence in their own progress.

If Cincinnati can weather the intensity in Kansas City and emerge sharp, it could set the tone for a transformative year in the Big 12. A strong showing isn’t just desirable — it’s essential.
